I'm afraid of the ocean.
Its crystalline surface like a turquoise mirror
shatters and reveals an open, onyx pit:
Depths so far, light can't reach them.
I find myself wondering, sometimes,
a frantic, vain thought
if it's silent there.
Can the fins and phantom tubers
of half-living sea fish
wander the ocean floor,
unblinking eyes watching every movement
each grain of sound,
triangular mouths flopping open
and closed,
tasting the dank watery air,
searching for a heartbeat
to snuff out?
I guess, when I really think about it,
the silence is the worst.
I could do with a little snuffing.
